Effect of increasing violence in Hollywood movies
Human race has always known to have enjoyed acts of heavy violence for ages now. It's in the history how Ancient Romans would pay money to witness gladiators chop off each others to pieces and to enjoy watching Christians being fed to hungry lions. In medieval times in Britain, nothing brought out crowds from their homes as when a public execution was being performed. Even Shakespeare, who is regarded by most as the greatest writer to have ever lived on earth, accounted in his work tales of abhorrent murders with nipping cruelty that were equally appreciated by the audience. So today what's the big deal with these Hollywood violent movies? Well, scientifically, psychological experiments in labs have clearly shown that observation of violent media spurs aggression in people. Researchers have shown that media violence can cause up to 5% to 10% of aggression in children. Researchers have also suggested that children exposed to too much quality or quantity of media violence tend to have a fear in their mind. Now, as it is human psychology to be aggressive when in fear, too much exposure of media violence increases aggression in the sensitive minds of children. Further, the amount of violence that children are getting exposed to can make them less or completely de-sensitive to the thought of violence. It also tends to make children believe in violence as a routine part of society and that tends to take them more to it.
There is also a contradictory school of thought to this view of overexposure to violence. There are some researchers who put forward the argument that only those children who have a natural and existing tendency of being aggressive will be negatively affected by overexposure to media violence. But think about it for a second, that as a parent would you really want your young child to watch one of those Hollywood violent movies with you? If you are undecided and aren't sure of what this is all about, just try to read any one of those good and thorough violent movie reviews and you'll get some idea as to why violent movies and children must never be allowed to meet. So if you are still thinking that this whole media violence thing is being blown out of proportion, perhaps it's time for you to get some of your data right.
Let's take a look at some of the Hollywood's most violent movies and/or movie scenes. Mickey and Mallory are two serial killers who travel conducting psychedelic mass-slaughters just for fun - not for revenge, money or any other justifiable or understandable reason but just for fun. In another scene from another one of those Hollywood violent movies, in futuristic Britain, four teenagers go and beat, kill, rape and torture helpless victims every night and that's pretty much all shown in the movie. Perhaps one of the most violent movies ever made, Fight Club tells the story of an insomniac and a salesman inventing a new form of therapy: fighting. This movie takes close camera shots at people fighting and badly bruising and battering each other. In hostel, another one of those innumerous Hollywood violent movies, a lady is shown taking shower with human blood that's oozing out of a body that she's tied above her head. The concept of hostel is that there are people who pay to torture and kill other human beings and the movie shows rather clear scenes of such extreme torturing, cutting and slicing of the subjects. In the movie Saving Private Ryan - one that is considered a war/drama classic - there are so many scenes full of extreme violence that it becomes impossibly hard to even refer this movie to somebody. In one scene of the movie, one American soldier stops his fellow troop from shooting the enemy soldiers who were coming out of a bunker ablaze where a bomb had just been dropped. The soldier's dialogue while stopping the other from shooting is, "don't shoot, let them burn." So sadly, there are all different types of violent movies in Hollywood.
As it is, violence is so easily accessible these days that it's growing increasingly difficult to keep violent movies and children from each other. A recent scientific research has revealed that more than 60% of all the TV shows contain violence of one form or the other, and then to make matters, there are so many of those Hollywood violent movies that are openly accessible to almost everybody.
When it comes to making the rather sorry list of the most violent movies of all time, there are a few names that instinctively come up: Scarface, Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers, Ed Gein, True Romance, A Clockwork Orange, Silence of the Lambs, Training Day, Apocalypse Now, Saw series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Passion of the Christ, I spit on your grave, House on the Edge of the Park, Schindler's List The Last House on the Left, Henry: Portrait of a serial-killer, A history of violence and Hostel series to name a few.
