The history of horror movies and the best horror movies ever

The word horror rings some bells in everybody's mind. Horror brings about different reactions in different people's minds but the key is it does bring about some reaction. Horror has a dictionary meaning of "an intense, painful feeling of repugnance and fear." If you try to read between the lines, even this literal meaning itself gives away the impression that horror - though not in a pleasant way - makes people anxious and excited. This easily sums up the reason and logic for storytellers to like the subject of horror so much for it's intriguing, exciting and makes the audience anxious. A storyteller doesn't need more.

When it comes to it, Hollywood horror films are nothing too different from the original subject of horror. In Hollywood, effect of horror movies is always to panic and frighten the audience and to invoke their worst hidden fears. Hollywood horror movies are especially designed, thought and made to have a shocking and terrifying ending that both, entertains and captivates the audiences with its edge-of-the-seat and nerve giggling execution. Most Hollywood horror movies are strongly based on the strange and forbidden aspects of human lives and thoughts. Most all Hollywood horror movies are made targeting vulnerability of human mind to its most primal fears such as the fear of death, fear of unknown, or the fear of losing our identity or loved ones.

To bring about the modern day effect of horror movies, some filmmakers have also tried combining horror with scientific fiction where our planet gets imperiled by outer space structures. Another genre of movies that often goes hand in hand with horror is thriller. This close link between horror and thriller movies stems from the fact that many people exhibit somewhat similar reaction to thriller as to horror. Hollywood horror movies are also often labeled as scary and macabre.

Some horror movie reviews these days bemoan a lot about horror movies going over the top with their use of violence and hurt. However, those who say/think so first need to fully understand in their minds that violence is as quintessential a part of a horror movie as romance is of a romantic movie. If you go back and pick the best movies of horror genre such as, the evil dead, nightmare on elm street, hostel, the Texas chainsaw massacre, driller killer, last house on the left, and saw, they have all had violence as their basic ingredient.

You can pick any of the horror movies article today and find it bashing the excessive use of dreaded and mind-boggling material. Maybe what needs to be taken into consideration is that the real effect of horror movies is only visible when they offer the moviegoers something that's unthinkable for them. And the truth is that in the world that we live today where there are killings and rapists and pedophiles and all other kinds of evil souls, repeatedly showing the same stuff over and over again would only culminate in the demise of Hollywood horror movies. It would be really na¡ve to think and believe that people would like to spend their money and time on something that they almost live with in their daily routine.

" There is also this argument about whether Hollywood horror movies have gone a little too far in the violence and gore aspects. However, for people to opine and make comments about it must first have a clear understanding of what a filmmaker wants the effect of horror movies on the audience to be. While it might be true that some people still find the old Hollywood horror movies "better" than their newer counterparts such as saw, hostel, house of 1000 corpses, etc., there are others that feel that blood, fear and violence are all integral parts of horror movies.

Going in a little history of Hollywood horror movies, Horror movies actually date as far back as the cinema itself. Right from the very early days of cinema, filmmakers have been using their imaginations and storytelling to scare the audiences with what they perceived to be improbable. It is also true that sitting through a horror movie gives a different kind of fear and, weird as it may sound, there is that fun and some kind of neat thrill in effect of horror movies.

Talking of the best horror movies, a few always come to mind instantly. The exorcist released in 1973 is hailed by many to be the scariest movie ever been made till date. Perhaps the scariest thing about the exorcist that makes it a clear winner in horror movies is that the central character is an unsuspecting possessed child with her awfully slashed face and those horrifying eyes with evil voice and the spin of her head! Then there are movies like Halloween, psycho, alien, the shining, the evil dead, the ring, Carrie and the omen, all of which can bring fear on the viewers face.
