History and scope of comedy movies

As per a typical copybook definition, Comedy is the genre of movies which emphasizes primarily on humor. Another thing about comedy movies is that most such films typically have happy endings. A particular subcategory of comedy which is black comedy is an exception to this basic rule as ending in black comedy movies aren't happy. Cinema is viewed as the grandest form of entertainment ever since it first came into existence close to 100 years back. So it's only logical and natural for filmmakers to weigh comedy as a frontline genre when looking to make a movie. Most Hollywood comedy movies are movies made with intent to bring smiles to audience's faces. Most popular comedy movies of their times might not have had the greatest storylines but they've obviously been utterly successful in making people smile and laugh.

Today with all the unrest and stress that's enveloped the world, there is a big segment of cinemagoers that believe that the genre of comedy films should be encouraged. The reason for that is that not only do these big Hollywood comedy movies make us laugh and enjoy our time in the cinema, these movies also bring our attention to what we might be missing in our lives. In a way, these comedy movies give us a new perspective to look at the world around us and to try and change it and ourselves for an overall betterment of everybody. There are different sub-genres of comedy movies such as a spoof or a parody, anarchical comedy, screwball, or black comedy. There is another sub-genre that relies chiefly on sexual humor or what is often termed as "toilet" humor. Such movies have recently gain popularity among young audiences and hence there is an attention shift towards this genre of movies. This category of movies is called sex comedy or adult comedy and some example of such movies are There's Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber and the hugely successful American Pie series.

"There are various categories that Hollywood comedy movies can be divided into depending on a different number of factors. However, the most common - and, perhaps most successful too - of all the Hollywood comedy movies categories is romantic comedy. Often also called as RomCom, Hollywood romantic comedy movies generally revolve around the subject of a funny and romantic story of a man and a woman. Of all the Hollywood movies, the ones that perhaps the biggest Hollywood comedy actors consider "safe" and are comfortable doing are these Hollywood romantic comedy movies. Most of such movies revolve around more or less the same plot with twists and turns in the characters' relationship and finally everything ending right for everybody. As most industry insiders would vouch for, Hollywood romantic comedy movies are often considered to be a return-guaranteed project and hence making it even more enticing for filmmakers to go for romantic comedy movies.

When it comes to the history and future of Hollywood comedy movies, there seems to be a divided opinion amongst cinema lovers. While there are some that believe that the best of Hollywood comedy movies have already been made, others believe that the canvas of comedy in and of itself is so big that there is always a never-ending scope of betterment. Most of the time, however, people from both school of thoughts concur on their choice of most popular comedy movies of all time.

Billy Wilder's release of 1959, Some Like It Hot, is fairly generally considered the best of all comedy movies ever made in Hollywood. This film's story revolves around two jazz musicians played by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis who happen to become a part of an all-girl band. Here they meet Marilyn Monroe who plays the role of sultry Sugar Kane. Some like It Hot is an ultimately hilarious yet made believable story of two singers who have to dress up as girls to join an all-girl band to avoid a mob's fury. Movie takes a superb comic turn when Tony Curtis, who plays singer Joe, falls for Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, played by the enigmatic Marilyn Monroe. But Joe can't go any further with his feelings for Sugar posing as a girl that he is. On the other hand, Jack Lemmon, who plays the other singer, Jerry, gets a superrich lover who won't take anything but yes for an answer.

Also often featuring in different lists of the most popular comedy movies are films such as Dr. Strangelove, Annie Hall, It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, Singin' in the Rain, Duck Soup, The Graduate, Airplane!, Blazing Saddles and many more. Right from the commencement of cinema, movies have always tried to emulate life and the comedy movies that have tried to show the cheerful side of human race have always been cherished by audiences all across the globe.
